In the first chapter of the Acts of the Apostles we are given the account of the choosing of Matthias as successor of Judas. Peter takes the lead in explaining what Judas had done and how it is necessary to choose a replacement for him. In the details of how Matthias is chosen, we can see not merely an election of a random man but a process that can teach us how to go about making important decisions. 

First, Peter reminds those listening of the tragedy of Judas’ sin. Then he implies how the choice of a replacement is required based on the decision of Jesus to choose the Twelve. Regarding who should be chosen, Peter notes that “it is necessary that one of the men who accompanied us the whole time the Lord Jesus came and went among us” (Acts 1:21).

With this as a requirement, there were two possibilities brought forth: Matthias and a man named Joseph (also called Barsabbas). Following these two options, the pick for Matthias comes about within two sentences.
